UNDERSTANDING GUM DISEASE: MORE THAN JUST BLEEDING GUMS
Many people
notice bleeding while brushing and assume it is normal. However, healthy gums
do not bleed. Bleeding gums are often the first sign of gum disease, a common
condition that affects the tissues supporting your teeth.
Gum disease
begins when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, accumulates around the teeth and
gums. In its early stage, called gingivitis, symptoms may include redness,
swelling, bad breath, and bleeding during brushing or flossing.
If left
untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more serious condition
that damages the bone supporting the teeth. Over time, this can lead to loose
teeth and even tooth loss.
The good
news is that gum disease is largely preventable. Brushing twice daily, flossing
regularly, and visiting your dentist for professional cleanings can
significantly reduce your risk.
If you
notice bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or gum swelling, do not ignore
these signs. Early treatment can help restore gum health and protect your smile
for years to come.
